Another Step (2026 Reissue)
Another Step was Kim's fifth studio album, first released in November 1986. It includes the US chart-topping hit single 'You Keep Me Hangin' On', a UK No. 2 for two weeks, it was kept from the peak by Berlin with 'Take My Breath Away (Love Theme From Top Gun)'.
This was followed into the charts by 'Another Step (Closer To You)' (UK No. 6), a duet with Junior (Giscombe), and 'Say You Really Want Me' (UK No. 29), the latter also included on the soundtrack of the 1986 action comedy film Running Scared. 'Schoolgirls' was released as a single in Australia, and mainland Europe.
Both formats now come with the bonus track 'Victim', originally only included on cassette and CD versions of the album.
The presence of British Soul singer Junior points to the broader influences on Another Step, which sees Kim move away from the synth-pop sound that marked her earlier releases, introducing elements of R&B and Rock. This new direction includes the use of a brass section on the up-tempo 'Hit Him', and a trio of female backing singers on the ballad 'How Do You Want My Love'.
While Ricky Wilde still handled most of the production duties, new recruits to the technical team included Rod Temperton (writer of hits for Heatwave, Michael Jackson, and George Benson, among others), Richard James Burgess (previously with Landscape, then producer for Spandau Ballet, New Edition, and Five Star), plus additional keyboards from Dire Straits' Guy Fletcher.
