Artery evolved from an earlier punk band named 'The' in 1978, before releasing a self-financed single as Artery in 1979. Three further singles followed, and they received support from none other than John Peel, for whom they recorded their first session for his BBC Radio 1 show in July 1981, recording a second early the next year. They signed to the Red Flame label in 1982, and after many lineup changes, the band was reduced to a trio by their second album, One Afternoon in a Hot Air Balloon, released in 1983.
