Stevie Ray had recently become sober, after years of drug and alcohol abuse. This is a recurring theme on the album. The response to 'In Step' was very positive. Allmusic rated it 5 out of 5 stars claiming 'it's fully realized, presenting every facet of Vaughan's musical personality, yet it still soars with a sense of discovery...' and Lou Reed selected 'In Step' as one of his picks in 1989.
